Despite the title, Miles and Monk do not perform together on the LP, but are represented on each side by separate live appearances at the Newport Jazz Festival — a series of high tempo performances of bebop tunes from Miles and a 1963 performance from Thelonious Monk’s combo, featuring an appearance by clarinetist Pee Wee Russell.
